An Overview of the BGM from the DBZ TV Series and Movies
LONG-OVERDUE NEWS (March 3, 2010): Apparently, a lot of BGM fans aren't aware that the laserdiscs from the DBZ movies were (somewhat) recently discovered to contain quasi-isolated music tracks. That means that kei17 and his brother, ThePetSounds (thanks to an audio donation from ballpen4), were able to take almost all of the unreleased music from the DBZ movies and put them up on YouTube for all to hear!! Give it a listen, they just recently put up the music from Movie 13, so now each movie's soundtrack is available!
ThePetSounds's channel - Go here for the unreleased scores from Movies 1 through 9 and 13, as well as other fun little goodies. [NOTICE: This channel is now defunct (the account was suspended). I could rant and rave about how this music was unreleased to begin with, so what on earth is the harm of having it up on YouTube?.... but I can't expect corporate bigwigs to understand this. However, thanks to labba94, you can get the mp3s here!]
ballpen4's channel - Go here for Movie 12's soundtrack.
I apologize for not bringing this up sooner - I had assumed the news was so widespread that everyone knew by now. But I guess we all know what "assuming" makes of a person...
There are still some mistakes, such as spots where the piece repeats itself in the movie and I don't list it. I need to go over the movies again. Also, I plan on changing some of the ridiculous names for the songs (they make sense here, in the actual movie, but when you name them over and over during the TV episodes, especially the pieces with long names, they come out tedious and redundant), so don't get attached to the song titles you read here.
Just so you know, the movie titles are, more or less, taken from Steven J. Simmon's translations from FUNimation's DVDs (the translations are a bit scattered and mixed with my own translations from before I saw the DVDs); and a good number of the track title translations from Ongakushu vol. 2 and the Movies 10 and 11 soundtracks are taken from the Daizenshuu EX Music Database (not sure if the credit goes to VegettoEX or SaiyaJedi).

NOTES
|
Known Alternates
- It may be M809-1 or M809-2, but whatever its number, there is a slightly slower-tempo alternate of Garlic Jr.'s Henchmen Introduce Themselves, which is found on d4:10(a). The reason the number is unknown is because while the five-CD Zenshuu set contained one take, the BGM Collection contained the other, but both were listed in their respective booklets as M809-1, and we may assume one of those has to be a mistake.
- Ongakushuu vol. 1 features an alternate take of The Battle Is Over, presumably numbered M819A.
The Cutting-Room Floor
- M809-1: Garlic Jr.'s Henchmen Introduce Themselves and M817: Gohan Pops Out are trimmed down in the movie, the former by a little, the latter by almost half!
- The originally intended alignment for M817 (in full) may be: 34:49 (beginning with the shot of Piccolo reacting to Gohan emerging from the rubble) - 36:10 (ending on the overhead shot of Gohan's massive energy blast traveling toward Garlic Jr.)
My evidence for this theory: The two drumshots and subsequent vibraslap at 0:25 in the unedited cue seem to match the shot of Garlic Jr. thrusting an arm at Gohan (which only knocks Gohan backward a few inches).

NOTES
- M926: Forming The Genkidama, as written, may have been meant to begin at 51:18 (the moment the shot of the desert switches over to Goku), which means the shots of the different climates would have been dead silent. Theoretically, someone in the sound department perhaps had a different idea and started up M926 early to cover up the silence, then looped the cue back to the beginning at 51:18. This creates a different effect, as silence causes the audience to hold its collective breath. It's a technique used quite a bit in 2001: A Space Odyssey (which this movie even references at 25:20 - 25:25, with the triple-closeup on the HAL-like camera). All of this, of course, is merely fan conjecture that this is what happened at all; however the next DBZ film, Super Battle to Decide the Whole Earth, demonstrates this technique of silence and how it creates a unique effect.
- M928: The Genkidama Hits uses the fanfare from the end of M413: Bulma And The Gang Head For The Majinjo, from DragonBall movie 2, The Sleeping Princess in the Devil's Castle.
The Cutting-Room Floor
- Between M903 and M919, there are 13 cues, but the numbers suggest there should be 15, meaning there are two unused cues in this movie.
- The unused M904 may be Anticipation, an unreleased cue which appears in the TV series. If so, it probably lines up like this:
08:23 - 09:17 (0:54)
Gohan wakes up and wonders where Piccolo is; he wakes up Oolong, who makes him promise never to tell the others about their little excursion; Gohan emerges from the snow cave
- The Pain Has Passed, which is also used a few times in the TV series (though much later on), may be the other one. It seems to fit 12:38 - 12:57, wherein Chichi is convinced that Gohan is becoming a delinquent (just because he fell asleep while studying), then she leaves the room, Gohan continues studying, and the scene switches over to Kame Sennin's island.
- If these guesses are incorrect, and the unused cues are different ones entirely, the other most likely candidate scenes are:
- 12:54 - 14:25, the scene where Bulma forces Oolong to do the cooking as punishment for breaking the Dragon Radar; there's someone at the door and Kame Sennin meets the Biomen
- 15:55 - 17:03, wherein Oolong delivers the news of Roshi and Bulma's capture to Goku; Goku flies off to save them; Gohan tries to follow, but Chichi has eyes in the back of her head
- 25:48 - 27:31, wherein Goku has an encounter with Misokatsun outside the castle; Goku races indoors, where he has to deal with spiked spheres

NOTES
- M1023: The World Is Healed comes in at 0:40:21, as well as the end of the movie. One could guess the music editor felt that Gohan's return to human form needed some sort of musical accompaniment, and picked this particular cue for reuse (I say "reuse" even though it appears before its designated scene). Either that or Kikuchi had in fact composed something different for this scene, but someone else thought M1023 fit better. If that's the case, then the next cue, The Carnival Shuts Down (which, by the way, uses the OP theme melody from Dr. Slump Arale-chan), may be outside of the numbering sequence or not even count as part of the music track.
After noticing how unnatural the placement of Showdown feels, and how it cuts short the fade-out of Goku Confronts Tullece Once And For All, it could be that Showdown was actually meant for the shot of Goku, with Gohan in his arms, giving Tullece that dirty look -- in which case, the timing would be something like 0:41:11 - 0:41:18, starting on the shot of a grinning Tullece and ending when the close-up on Goku is fully tightened.
Known Alternates
There exists an alternate take of M1008A: The Shinseiju Is Grown. It can be heard in DBZ episode 88, and differs by its lack of a "shimmer" sound.
The Cutting-Room Floor
M1011A: The Henchmen's Theme, Part 1 may have been composed to begin at 25:28, coinciding with the right-to-left camera pan of the heroes immediately after they land on the tree's outcropping, but it's possible someone decided silence would be best until the very moment the villains actually appeared onscreen. The first six seconds were shaved off (I presume this was done to avoid misaligning the cue).
M1016: Haiya Dragon Pacifies Oozaru Gohan -- the possible original alignment may have been 0:38:15 (beginning with the first shot of Haiya Dragon after Gohan stops roaring and looks down at him) - 0:39:37 (as Haiya Dragon is hit by Tullece's blast).
The most significant musical cut (that we know about) in this movie comes in the form of M1018: Spectator Tullece (uncut length: 0:52), a decidedly upbeat cue that doesn't quite fit the tone of the scene it appears to have been intended for, wherein Goku faces off against all the henchmen at once while Piccolo attacks Tullece, berating him for just standing by and watching. (A presumed alignment would be 0:42:49 - 0:43:43, beginning with the wide shot after the henchmen surround Goku; try lining it up yourself and see how Piccolo's theme music comes in when he attacks Tullece.) Despite the fact that it was cut from the movie, and never shows up in the TV series, this cue has been made available on every BGM CD that contains Movie 3 music. It can be found on On1:4(d), d4:24(a) and Bgm3:5(a).
M1021: A Sign Of Hope lasts seven seconds longer on the CD because the first trio of percussion strikes were dropped from the final film. One could guess that the cue was originally written to start up the moment we get that slightly spooky shot of the good guys just floating there in front of Tullece. 0:49:05 - 0:50:56 is probably the originally intended alignment for this cue, if played in full. 0:49:06 - 0:50:57 is the alignment one would use if they were to sync up the unedited cue with this scene without realigning it, but the former makes more sense to me. Why would they start up a cue in the middle of Tullece's sentence (between the words "mada" and "ikite 'ta")?
Finally, if my numbering conjectures are right, there's one more unused cue, and it was meant to go either sometime during the 0:46:09 - 0:49:11 space (wherein Goku tries a 10x Kaioken on Tullece but still can't catch up with him, Tullece tries to no avail to get Goku to kneel before him then blasts the living daylights out of him before going to get more fruit, during which time Goku hears the voices of his companions cheering him on), or the 0:50:56 - 0:53:52 space (wherein Goku's Genkidama fails, Tullece gloats over the fruit, the Earth dries up and the wind dies, and Goku realizes he can get energy from the tree). Given the stylistic silence of the latter scene, I'm inclined to believe it was meant to be presented this way from the beginning, so it's probably the former scene where the mystery cue would have gone.

*They put the wrong piece on the Movie 10 soundtrack! What actually plays here in the movie is a replay of the same piece from Piccolo's appearance (the REAL Piccolo) in Movie 8 (piece 22), but they put an entirely different Movie 8 theme on the CD in its place. Talk about sloppy...
