SPORTING GOODS
BATTERED BAT
ボロのバット
Plastic Bat
Cracked Bat
It holds the honor of being the first weapon the protagonist obtains, weathered though it is. No doubt he used this thing to play baseball once upon a time. Is it a memento of someone?
★

$80
ORDINARY BAT
ふつうのバット
Wooden Bat
Teeball Bat
A wooden bat you can buy at the Department Store's sports counter. I could go for some good ol' baseball if possible, but the Earth is in the middle of a crisis. Let's make a weapon out of this and give it our all.

GOOD BAT

BEST BAT
さいこうのバット
Hank's Bat
HallFameBat (INFO: Hall of Fame Bat)
The ultimate of the weapons the protagonist can equip. This is a metal bat that, to be frank with you, is banned from use in the Big League. Something about it making every ball fly too far. You know what that means — it's just as super-powered in weapon form. When you're using this, I bet your body and spirit are both getting quite a bit stronger.

SLINGSHOT
スリングショット
[Same name across the board]
You might call this an American-made pachinko. It's rather more intricately-fashioned than the Japanese kind, so its accuracy rate is high and its impact force is heavy. Normally you have fun targeting high-up tree branches, but this is its debut as a weapon. It's super handy because anyone can easily use it. A team player for the Reasonable Weapons.

ARTIST PROFILE
When I created the weapons category of items, I felt like Doc from Back to the Future.
Artist
Miss Hiromi Kanai
カナイ ヒロミ
In this corner we introduce you to Hiromi Kanai, who pulled out all the stops to create the items for us. Her main line of work is futon artist. She's said to have made, out of fabric and cotton, everything from horse mackerel to jungles. After playing MOTHER for her latest gig, her impressions are: "Oh, I just love Magicant. I'm especially crazy about the Flying Men and the snail-like castle." Maybe there's something about the wonder of Magicant that speaks to her work sensibilities. Imagine being able to create such cool-looking items despite it being so radically different from your everyday job. We were blown away by what a pro can do (we had Miss Kanai create these items from her own free imagination).
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
VEHICLES
RAILWAY
A branch of the American Transcontinental Railroad, it's popularly known as the Paradise Express. This railway spans about 81.3 miles, connecting the stations of Easter, Santa Claus, Reindeer, Halloween and Snowman. Its short formation of two cars, unusual for America, goes to show how quiet it is around here. You can bet there's no such thing as a commuter rush in these parts. However, for some reason or another, the track south of Santa Claus Station is blocked off by a boulder, so operations are currently suspended. To this day, it's not looking so hot for the possibility of getting things restored.
AIRPLANE
An old-school biplane which saw action in World War I is still flying around spiritedly through the skies above Advent Desert. Full disclosure: this plane is actually the property of an airline business (if you can call it that) run by "Gramps", as he's best known as. They say his sightseeing flights have a little local fame, but for the general public, there's a sign in the desert that reads, "Why Not Try a Sight-Flight?" and this alone can make you feel like you'd be rude not to. In any case, at only $5 ~ 15 a pop, it's fun to be able to go on one of these airborne tours. What's more, they also say you can ride the tank if you collect ten Ticket Stubs.
TANK
Right next to the airplane is this tank, and I hear this thing was born in the same time period. It looks like an antique, but "Gramps" takes good care of it, he'll have you know, keeping it waxed to a shining sparkle. If you look at the license plate, you'll see the letters AT-19. He keeps the gun well-polished, too, so you could surely blow away any old boulder with it. This tank may be a little shabby, but the time will surely come when it'll come in handy. It sounds like a load of hot air, but I'm telling you the truth, trust me!
BOAT
Halfway up the murderous Holy Loly Mountain lies a lake of strikingly deep blue. Stalled there is this motorboat. The engine is busted, but one gets the feeling it'd run if fixed. It's times like this when the mechanically inclined Lloyd comes in useful. I want to believe something will be managed. We've come this far doing intense battle, day in and day out, with the aliens, so it's everyone's wish to be able to let loose and have fun with this boat. I want to explore the lake!

¹ The Time Machine was replaced in subsequent releases with the Super Bomb.
² This is oddly inaccurate. The Flamethrower is strictly a Bla-Bla Gang member item drop.
³ While the versions of the game we're most familiar with place the Ashigaru Sword in the Underflow itself, in the original Famicom release (which the Encyclopedia reflects), the weapon is in the maze of wells before the Underflow proper.
⁴ The Friendship Ring is only in the original Famicom release of MOTHER, as is a rather cruel mechanic: if you give the Forgotten Man a response he doesn't like, he'll whisk you clear out of the cave. If you have the Friendship Ring in your inventory, you'll be warped back to the girl who gave you the ring. See this Twitter thread for details. The "E = ALL" underneath this item's entry is a bit of a misnomer — it can't be equipped. Nothing happens if you USE it, and you only need it in your inventory for the effect to occur.
⁵ The 1989 edition of the Encyclopedia words this differently: "The lost property of the old prophet who lives on a mountain in Reindeer."
⁶ In other words, it isn't a collectible, like a commemorative coin or stamp.
