Since this is a documentation of the Japanese version's BGM, I used the Japanese names for the characters, places and Pokemon. I realize this will probably confuse the heck out of most English-speaking fans. I consider it to be a necessary evil: even though I feel danged silly for it, I'd feel even sillier using the English names, because that would lead people into believing this is a documentation of 4Kids' BGM. Even I found myself typing Muk instead of Betobeton every now and again, when I was particularly absent-minded.

You just know an update out of the blue means SOMETHING pretty awesome, right? Well, you know that beautiful and mysterious music cue that represents Mew in the Birth of Mewtwo radio drama? Pan pipes... folk songy... Andean flavor... yes, THAT one? Well, after 24 years of haunting the living daylights out of this fan (and I'm sure many others), it's finally been ID'd!

Here on this site, as a sort of placeholder, I had previously referred to this piece as "A Cry From The Distant Past ~Mew's Theme~". It turns out it's really called Patagonian Express, and it's a piece of library (aka "stock") music from a British CD label called Atmosphere. You can legally listen to it for free at the Universal Production Music site (scroll down to Track 30: "Patagonian Express", and enjoy!). This is one of the many sites where you can preview library tracks before purchasing a license to use them.

Library music, as I've discovered over the past year, is a vast sea to swim through, even if you're limiting your searches to material from before the year 2000; but I don't want anyone believing I put in quite *all* the work required to track down this cue. In the end I was able to, well, cheat by using a content ID program specialized for library scores. To an extent, I'm kicking myself for that. Atmosphere was a label that was very high on my to-listen list, so I was on the right track and would have found it eventually. I still can't believe it was right under my nose the whole time.

More info: "Patagonian Express" isn't an authentic recording of a tribal song (as I myself began to wonder during part of my search), but was composed by Steve Everitt, and named after a real-life train -- the Old Patagonian Express -- that passes through the Andean foothills. This train gained international fame after a novelist, Paul Theroux, wrote about his experience riding it. (I should have realized the song's pan pipes and rhythm were meant to evoke a steam locomotive.)

The CD it appears on, Travelogues 1 (Atmosphere Vol. 23), came out in 1990, eight years before the track would end up being used in the Mewtwo drama.

Many thanks to the great help I received in my search, including Dogasu, who used Dig, and though not much information came of it, it was still Super Effective in rejuvenating my hopes at a time when I was beginning to believe I was wrong about the cue being library.
